The Stockholm Convention came into effect in 2001 with the aim of eliminating or reducing the release into the environment of POPs, a class of highly toxic and stable chemicals produced by human activity, which accumulate in the environment and are transported and concentrated in certain regions by atmospheric circulation. Afghanistan acceded to the Stockholm Convention in 2013. A largely qualitative inventory of POPs releases in Afghanistan has been prepared as part of this NIP, which identifies clear national priorities for addressing POPs.
