NO 2020 brought a pandemic and heat with climate impacts: floods, droughts, storms, wildfires, and locusts. Current Paris pledges steer the world toward at least 3°C warming, magnifying these hazards. Rapid emissions cuts are essential to keep warming well below 2°C and pursue 1.5°C, which would limit, but not eliminate, harm, especially for vulnerable communities. Given uncertainties, countries must plan, finance, and implement adaptation across the full range of possible temperature outcomes to avoid severe costs, losses, and damages. Adaptation reduces vulnerability by strengthening capacity to absorb shocks and remain resilient, and the Paris Agreement requires parties to pursue it through national plans, monitoring, and investment. The latest UNEP Adaptation Gap Report finds progress in planning and implementation but large gaps in finance and in delivering risk reduction.
