Its central purpose is to assess how fisheries and dependent societies have responded to environmental fluctuations and abrupt ecological disturbances, and to use these experiences as analogues for anticipating future impacts of climate change. The volume adopts a forecasting by analogy approach, explicitly recognising the current limitations of regional climate projections and ecological models. It analyses biological and oceanographic processes affecting fish recruitment, distribution, and productivity, alongside economic structures, management regimes, technological adaptation, and institutional responses. The case studies address stock collapses, shifts in species abundance, regulatory transformations such as the extension of exclusive economic zones, and extreme climatic events including El Niño.
