NO Farming Systems Research (FSR) has increased in popularity recently both in academic circles and among administrators of national and international agricultural development programmes. In the expectation that FSR programmes will continue to demonstrate their effectiveness in developing and promoting new technologies which will be acceptable to small-holder or low-resource farmers, and, therefore, widely adopted by them, it is important to examine the impact which FSR programmes could have on the environment.
