NO This book is the final output of an 18-month project, Greening China’s Financial System, carried out by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and the Finance Research Institute (FRI), Development Research Center (DRC) of the State Council, in association with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Inquiry into the Design of a Sustainable Financial System, and with support from the Fridtjof Nansen Institute. The aim is to develop specific proposals for greening China’s financial system based on an analysis of current practice in China and an exchange of experience with international experts. The project was carried out through initial research, which led to the publication Greening China’s Financial System: An Initial Exploration in 2013. This was followed up in 2014 with in-depth research workshops with Chinese and international experts in Beijing, and a study tour by the DRC to Europe and the United States to understand the latest developments in this field. This included attending the Global Green Growth Forum, meetings with the Fridtjof Nansen Institute and other key finance-related institutions in Norway, as well as Citi Group in the United States. We also participated in a multi-country symposium, hosted by the UNEP Inquiry and the Rockefeller Brothers Foundation, that included participants from the central banks of China, Bangladesh and Brazil; the Prudential Regulation Authority of the Bank of England; the U.S. Treasury; Global Green Growth Initiative; and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory
