NO This policy guidance outlines how the United Nations Environment Programme engages with Indigenous Peoples as partners in environmental policy development, decision-making and implementation. It explains the rationale for engagement, describes Indigenous Peoples’ rights, knowledge systems and environmental stewardship, and sets out mechanisms for participation, capacity development, consultation and institutional coordination. The document establishes procedures for incorporating Indigenous Peoples’ perspectives into programme planning, project implementation, environmental assessments and governance processes, including the application of free, prior and informed consent where relevant. It also addresses thematic areas such as climate change, ecosystem management, disasters, environmental governance, hazardous substances and sustainable consumption and production, while aligning UNEP’s work with international frameworks and human rights standards.
