Diagnostic and a Baseline Study for Implementing Ecosystem-based Adaptation in Rural Landscapes of The Gambia

This report presents the baseline study for a large-scale ecosystem-based adaptation initiative in the Gambia River Basin that seeks to support climate resilience and sustainable natural resource management. It establishes initial conditions, indicators and monitoring frameworks to assess project progress and outcomes. The document describes the national environmental context, including climate variability, ecological conditions, soils and forest resources. It outlines the methodology used to collect and analyse data through field surveys, vegetation inventories, stakeholder consultations and secondary information sources across selected regions, community forests, protected areas and rural households. The findings characterise community livelihoods, agricultural and agroforestry systems, forest conditions and vulnerability to climate change, while examining natural resource-based enterprises, policy environments and institutional capacities relevant to adaptation implementation.
