Abstract
This assessment document presents Malawi’s environmental status and development prospects, integrating environmental sustainability with economic growth priorities. Initiated in 2009 with support from the joint UNDP-UNEP Poverty and Environment Initiative, the 2010 State of the Environment and Outlook Report (SEOR) offers a detailed account of environmental trends and dynamics using the Integrated Environmental Assessment approach based on the DPSIR (Drivers, Pressures, State, Impact, Response) framework. This methodology ensures continuity with previous reporting while enabling robust assessment of environmental change. The report analyzes key thematic areas—including land use, energy, water resources, biodiversity, climate change, and urban development—within the context of national frameworks such as the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy. It also includes scenario-based outlooks and comprehensive policy analysis, offering structured tools and recommendations to support informed decision-making. Developed through wide stakeholder consultation and rigorous peer review, the SEOR is both a policy resource and a mechanism for enhancing public awareness and cross-sectoral collaboration.
