The Kosovo conflict consequences for the environment and human settlements

This report presents the findings of five technical missions and a desk assessment undertaken by the Joint United Nations Environment Programme and United Nations Centre for Human Settlements Balkans Task Force to evaluate the environmental and human settlement consequences of the Kosovo conflict in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Based on field visits, laboratory sampling, expert analysis and institutional review, it examines industrial ‘hot spots’, impacts on the Danube river system, possible effects of depleted uranium, biodiversity in protected areas, and damage to housing and infrastructure. The assessment finds no overall ecological catastrophe in the Danube basin, but identifies serious localised contamination risks, extensive housing destruction, weakened administrative systems, and significant institutional constraints affecting environmental management and recovery.
