Environmental management: issues and solutions

This document is a resource developed by UNEP based on a series of seminars held in 1991 that brought together environmental experts from 20 developing countries to share knowledge and case studies. It presents a multi-layered examination of the challenges and strategies of environmental management, starting with the basic principles of sustainable development and human ecology. The document addresses ecosystem processes, environmental ethics and the integration of science, education and policy. It includes detailed chapters on marine and coastal ecosystems, land degradation, freshwater scarcity, biodiversity conservation, waste management and impacts of energy production. A large part of the document is dedicated to real case studies from different countries that illustrate both the problems and local solutions. It also presents tools such as environmental monitoring systems, data collection, legal frameworks and international conventions. With a strong focus on environmental education, particularly Sustainable Development Education, the document advocates for capacity building and community-oriented solutions.
