Outcome message of the online meeting of the fifth session of the Environment Assembly

This document records negotiated messages from the online first part of the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, held in Nairobi on 22–23 February 2021, in the context of COVID-19. It acknowledges the pandemic’s compounded health, social, economic, and environmental impacts, reaffirms UNEP’s mandate as the leading global environmental authority, and welcomes UNEP’s Medium-Term Strategy 2022–2025 and Programme of Work and Budget 2022–2023. It commits to supporting a sustainable, inclusive recovery, advancing the 2030 Agenda, and strengthening progress under multilateral environmental processes, including the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement, the Convention on Biological Diversity and its post-2020 framework, the UNCCD, and chemicals and waste agendas.
